In a significant step towards enhancing sustainability and reducing environmental impact Tamworth and Lichfield's joint waste service is set to procure a specialised fleet of food waste collection vehicles and food waste containers for our residents’ use.
This initiative is part of the government’s new ‘Simpler Recycling’ plans, which require all councils in England to provide separate food waste collections by March 2026. It aims to standardise recycling across the country and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
This follows the launch of the Recycle for Good campaign and in line with the Environmental Act 2021, aims to improve levels of recycling across the district.
Councillor Phil Whitehouse, Cabinet Member for Operational Services at Lichfield District Council, said: “Currently, unless residents compost it, food waste is discarded in black bins which is then incinerated leading to higher carbon emissions and missed recycling opportunities. By diverting food waste from black bins to dedicated collections we will be able to drive up the amount of waste we recycle and reduce our carbon footprint.”
Following the acquisition of new food waste trucks, both councils will begin the phased rollout of food waste collections in early 2026. Residents will be provided food waste containers and detailed guidance on how to get involved. Information will also be provided explaining the importance of proper food waste disposal and the positive impact it has on the environment.
Councillor David Foster, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Environmental Sustainability, Waste and Recycling at Tamworth Borough Council said: “The procurement of these specialised trucks is a critical part of our preparation for the food waste collection rollout. We are excited about the positive changes this service will bring, allowing our residents to actively participate in reducing waste and increasing recycling. This is a win-win for our communities and both councils.”
The joint waste service between Tamworth Borough Council and Lichfield District Council is dedicated to providing efficient, environmentally-conscious waste collection services. By working collaboratively, the councils aim to meet ambitious sustainability goals, reduce waste, and serve as a model for innovative waste management solutions.
